winlogon.exe causing problems

Okay, when I boot up Windows and click my username, it loads up ok. Then,
when I open my Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL) Under the processess list, there
is:

WINLOGON.EXE
winslogon.exe

I have not seen these files before, but they are causing problems. They slow
my computer down dramatically (winslogon.exe takes up about 99% CPU Usage) I
can end the process ok, but I still want to know what it is. When I go to
START>RUN>MSCONFIG and try to disable it from startup, it just comes back
when I reboot. Same goes for the registry entrys, I remove them and they
come back. If it helps, the files are both located in my
C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder and I tried to delete them and kept them in my
recycle bin just in case(worked ok) but when I rebooted it gave me an error
message about it not being there. Weird thing was, I was able to hit OK, then
my desktop loaded normally and all was good, but I didn't like the error
message, so I restored the fiels until I could get a better way of dealing
with them. ANY AND ALL HELP IS GREATLY APPRECIATED! Everyone on this
newsgroup are the nicest, coolest people I know, and you haven't failed me
yet, so, don't fail me now!

Hi Chris,

If your system isn't clean, start with this combo:

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:

Note: Update each program, once installed, before running.

Free Online Virus Scan

Microsoft Windows AntiSpyware

Added info:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&c2coff=1&q=winlogon.exe&spell=1

As per the latter listing, never heard of it. Good luck and keep us posted!

"Winlogon.exe" is a system file by default, "Winslogon.exe" does not
belong to Windows. Check the origin of both files (Properties >
Version). If the origin isn't clear, scan your system for "Malware"
(spyware, viruses, worms, trojans).
