WindowsXP will not shut down!!!

I CLICK ON THE COMPUTER TURN OFF BUTTON........DISPLAYS WINDOWS IS SHUTTING
DOWN......HOUR GLASS JUST CARRIES ON INDEFINITELY......ANY ADVICE.......?
 
Do all of your windows updates.
They may install at the time of shutting down, but then it should shut down
automatically once they have finished.
Just try doing all of the updates available first.
