Windowsxp - icon display

Hello .. I use windowsxp at home and at the office. Both systems have icon
files in addition to those which come with Windows. At home, in desktop
explorer I can see the picture associated with the icon file, and also when
I click the change icon button in a properties window, but not on my system
at the office.

Any help on this would be most appreciated.

The program associated with the file extension isn't installed. Does the
same program they open in exist on both machines

Some DLL's & EXE's have embedded resources such as icons therefore if you
have the same applications on both machines maybe one is looking at a
different insexed file.
