WindowsXP hangs on shut down screen

Hi:

My windows is up to date and since the updates, windowsXP
has tended to just come to a complete stop and hang on
the shut down screen "Windows is Shutting Down", but does
not access the HD, and has to be physically shut off from
the computer case at that point, Restarting is fine, but
shutting down just does not occur past the blue screen....

any ideas welcome
