I've tried several times to download and in the progress box it goes over 4
bars and won't go any farther with the download. No error messages or
anything. It just won't complete. I have Windows XP Home edition

Shut down the computer and turn off the power. Wait for at least 30 seconds,
and then restart the computer in Safe mode or VGA mºde.

You can clear prefetch files by going to Start menu and Run and typing
prefetch, and then click OK.

Open a Internet window and go to Internet Options, Delete Cookies and Temp
Files and included all offline content then also go to start and run and type
%temp% and clear that fºlder.

Run the Disk Cleanup tººl
To start the Disk Cleanup tool, click Start, click run, type cleanmgr.exe in
the Open box, and then click OK.

Enable Hidden Files and folder's.

To enable hidden files and folders Go to taskbar, click Start > My Computer.
On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
On the View tab, uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
Make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled.
Display the contents of system folders' is checked & 'Hide extentions for
known file types ' is not checked then press ªpply.
You can set this back later by opening the same page and pressing 'restore

*.dll files in those fºlders.

I did everything exactly as you said ,step by step. The only thing that
didn't show in the entire process was a folder to clear when I typed in
%temp%. All your instructions before and after that process worked. I do the
critical window updates the second Tuesday of every month, Avast updates
automatically every day I turn on the comp, and I search for updates daily
for AdAware, Spybot, and Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1, so that part is no
problem.

I tried downloading Defender again and still no go. I just want to thank you
Sir for your time and assistance...Guess I'll just have to stick with beta 1.
Glad I found this forum though and will continue to follow it.......Thanks
again..

Hi Gemini536,

Don't worry about the the folder when you try to use the %temp%, that folder
was allready clean when you use the command.

Wait after the holyday, by then someone from MS should read this post a give
a good solution.

Good luck
