UNOFFICIAL Windows98 Second Edition Service Pack 1.5 (Freeware)

Microsoft has never released a service pack for Windows98 SE. But I made
a Service Pack for Windows98 SE users. It contains all Windows98 SE
updates from Windows Update site and more.

It is a self-extracting and self-installing pack like Microsoft's update
files. Thus, you cannot choice files individually. However, the pack
installs only required fixes for your system. Uninstallation is possible
from Add-Remove Programs. However, I don't recommend uninstallation of
the pack, if you don't have any problem.

This is only for WINDOWS 98 SECOND EDITION ENGLISH. I highly recommend
that you should backup your system before installing the pack.

It contains only operating system updates. It does NOT contain Internet
Explorer 6, DirectX 9, Media Player 9 and their updates.

This guy had a great idea and this would have been great to have on hand

This guy had a great idea and this would have been great to have on hand
had M$ not stolen his thunder with the Windows Security Update CD.

I think this guy has a bit more than just security. Lots of OS
improvements, and the convenience of one install, rather than many
dozens of security patches that need to be done in a particular order.

No argument here, but...

The concern of many is that this package is an all-or-nothing
proposition. Those of us who do clean W98SE installs would really
appreciate being able to bring them (nearly) up to date from a CD rather
than via Windows Update or going through the drudgery of compiling our
own archive of updates. On the other hand, I personally would prefer to
determine what -- if any -- "updating" I was gonna do above and beyond
the Critical Security Updates. For that reason, the Windows Security
Update CD more closely fills my needs -- including updating IE to v6sp1.

That being said, of the handful of people that have reported their
experiences with this installation, I recall hearing of only one
problem. That's something that's hard to argue with.

That's funny. When I first posted it here, there were warning from others
here to stay away from it.

Yes, I recall that too... But if memory serves, those warnings were of
the general "Are you sure you wanna let this guy that nobody's ever
heard of get that deep into your OS?" type, rather than first hand
reports of actual problems or difficulties. More cautionary than
experiential. Going on memory here though, and it's getting more faulty
by the day...

Well, YOU may have a faulty memory, but not me.

What were we talking about anyway?

Where have you been for the past few months? Microsoft released a
security update disk that covers XP, ME, 2000Pro,98, and 98SE. It is
free, no shipping charges, sent via Purolator, and a free Anti Virus for
a year, and free Firewall for a year. No risk of downloading a virus
from an unknown site.

I've tried to order that CD several times, and each time the order
page tells me it's processing my order before I even get to give any
information, and displays a progress bar that never moves - no error
messages. It's probably a torture designed specially for those who've
disabled some of IE's favourite security risks.

And you have to give your address, name, email, and it gives you a
couple of free data loggers, and takes ages to arrive.

Get Direct-X plugins, sign into MS anonymously with its plug-in, and
fetch what you want. Or use unofficial "approved" service pack. It
works.

Of course you have to give your name and address; how the hell are they
supposed to mail it to you without that info. As far as taking forever
to arrive is concerned, I got mine within a week. My dad then ordered
one for his computer, and had it a week later.

Of course you have to give your name and address; how the hell are they

I know MS aren't psychic, but I bet you didn't tick the 'for marketing
purposes only...' only box. The point was what happens to the info you
gave MS. And if you can retain your privacy to a certain extent while
removing more flaws from your flawed original install, why not do that?

Is this the cd dated Aug 2003? That's 10 months and a week for an out of
date update. The up to date patches are all available at MS, and you can
anonymously pick these up. The cd also didn't like my system because I
don't have things like OE, IE, FF, MSN, and other bits and pieces
necessary. The last patch also spat the dummy, but the unoff. patch
seemed to slide in easily....

Beating weallhatebillgates with the contrition stick, PuppyKatt
administered correction with...
February 2004 disk.

So it's only 4 months out of date? So you have to visit MS anyway.......
