Win98 SE SP-1 Released

B

Bob Adkins

It's an "unofficial" 7.5mb download, and has functional and interface
updates. Don't ask me if this is from Microsoft or just a hack. But I repeat
myself. :)

Better hurry before the site gets clogged up!

http://exuberant.web1000.com/98sesp.html

- 52 hot fixes. (All of them are from Microsoft's Windows Update.)
- 256-color tray. (Some icons on the tray like WinAMP's icon will be shown
better.)
- Better Defrag. (Faster. It is from Windows ME. However, It works properly
on the Windows98 SE.)
- Better Notepad. (Same Notepad with more key bindings.)
- Optimized swap file usage. (Windows will not to use the swapfile at all
until all of the RAM is used.)
- Better WDM/USB support. (Most problems about WDM drivers and USB devices
are solved.)
- Windows Scripting Host 5.6. (It is latest version of Scripting Host which
also contains VBScript and JScript support.)
- Visual Basic 6.0 SP5 runtime library. (To run Visual Basic 6.0 programs.)
- Windows2000 color scheme. (You should select it from Control
Panel-Display-Apperance.)
- A few performance tweaks.

Ha! This proves I am not anti-Win9X. :)

lol..... it's hosted by web1000.com, that should instantly set alarm bells
ringing. I wouldn't trust anything hosted or run by them if my life depended
on it!.

I would not trust anything that is hosted/run by web1000.com , so I would
recommend not visting the site that supposedly has a service for Windows 98

Sorry about that.

Since I got the link from a reputable site, I didn't pay any attention to
where the file resided.

I originally found it on http://www.warp2search.net/index.php

Allegedly, "1500 downloads and no complaints so far". <shrug>

Lottsa 'heads-up' cautions about this one. But, even if it (likely) turns
out
to be somebody's heartfelt hack for general benefit, it is NOT a subject
for a.c.f. Win98se still belongs to Microsoft, regardless of whether we
like it or not, and thus ... it is NOT freeware. This belongs in one of the
binary crack forums.

Not Freeware? There's no charge for it. Not even any nags or requests for
donations.
Win98se still belongs to Microsoft, regardless of whether we
like it or not, and thus ... it is NOT freeware.

This is not Win98SE. It's a collection of free updates and add-ons, and has
nothing to do with that devil MS. If it does, so does other improvements
like Google Toolbar, MyIE2, and X-Setup.
This belongs in one of the binary crack forums.

Hmmmm... www.majorgeeks.com is not known for posting crack material. Now who
will I believe?

You'll have to excuse me, but I think I'll believe MajorGeeks. :)

Unfortunately, while most people follow the rule: "If it ain't broke, don't
fix it", I live by the rule: "If it ain't broke, keep messing with it unitl
it eventually DOES become broke".

I downloaded and installed this software. On booting up again, I was
confronted by several error messages, and eventuially a BSoD.

On subsequent reboots I got messages that my Registry was corrupt.

I think I managed to fix everything now, but it was a bit scary, and has put
me off trying this software again. May be it was something to dso with my
machine, but I would urge anyone else who might be tempted to be cautious.

Always know what you are doing, and always consider the risk of such
programs before any attempt at using it. Learn how to clone complete
hard-drive and have redundant back-ups (2-3 copies).

It worked just fine for me. No problems.

I reinstalled Win98SE. Used the Win98 SE SP-1. Still had to spend
hours getting other updates from Microsoft.
