I have a (1 year old) Dell Inspiron that came with this
O/S installed. We have had MANY problems with LINKSYS
equipment networking our home PC's. My youngest gave up
using her laptop (8 months ago) because she either could
not access internet, or print. Finally got laptop to
access internet, but cannot print. Two of
Dell's 'wireless' techs said it amounts to same problem.
One of LINKSYS techs agreed. Even though I paid $600
for 'complete care' for 5 years, Dell cannot repair it.
They say it is an advanced problem, and have no idea how
it happened. Technicians tell me problem is a check box in
software that should be there, isn't. Start, control
panel, network, click on properties for any of the
connections listed and you get a box with 3 tabs. If you
click on the advanced tab, there should be a box where you
can UN check the firewall in XP (even though we do not
have it installed for McAfee, or through LINKSYS router,
it exists in the XP software and is preventing the laptop
from seeing the printer, even though it can access the
internet). Our software does not have that checkbox (it
does, however, have a message about corrupted software and
that a management program took over). Any advice would be
appreciated. I would like to give my daughter her machine
back so that she can do her schoolwork. It serves no
purpose sitting in it's case on the floor. Yes, the laptop
did print before. What happened? My daughter downloaded a
program called Kazaa. I uninstalled it. It could not print
with it on. That is the only thing I can find different
from the original installation. I cannot restore because
of data that has to be printed (Catch-22) before I do
that).Thank you.

Go to Start | Run, type "devmgmt.msc" in the box, and click OK. In
Device Manager, un-install the wireless network adapter. Then, reboot
and let Windows XP detect and re-install it.

If that doesn't fix the problem, call Dell back and insist that they
either repair the computer under warranty or replace it with a new
one.
