you make valid points, but

those that have experience
difficulties.

"this is a fact and not an opinion".

we all know that sp3 is
not functional on 100
percent of the pc's.

in regards to your drivers
experience, you have likely
benefitted from making
good choices.

however, ultimately making
software/drivers is costly
for some manufactures and
most depend on selling a new
piece of hardware instead of
spending money on re-engineering
updates for sp3 when they spent
all their resources on vista.

people forget that vista was a
big deal and came out way before
sp3, which many people believe
this to have been a mistake.

personally, i don't believe there
are any benefits for having produced
sp3 and everyone could have
cared less if about sp3 as well.

instead microsoft should have
stayed on course providing
smaller updates to the o.s. as
they have done methodically
and dependably for many years.

unless, microsoft had some belief
that they would market and sell
windows sp3, like they did with
sp2.

so if i were to make a calculated
guess, until sp3 is fully compatible
or until there are more updates provided
like sp3.1 or sp4, we will hear from
disgruntled window users.

we should not minimalize their
disappointments or their actual
experiences with sp3.

and for those who automatically
accepted the sp3 update because
they are not computer savvy, well
they will have to either order an
sp3 disk from microsoft or become
computer savvy and build an sp3
cd if they want some security to
repair their system in the future
if the need arises - which will be
likely.

No problems installing it on 3 Dell PCs, two with XP Pro SP2 and one with
XP Home SP2. Only hitch was having to install the Hive Cleanup tool on the
XP Home one to speed up shut down.

Hec, I tried to download OneCare, and it took me hours -- I gave up. It
removed AVAST, and Ad-Aware (I've heard they are "dangerous" anyway so I
approved the removal), then the after to 21min download, it kept asking me
for my live email account - but wouldn't accept it. Twice I re-started, did
it over again, etc. Eventually, had to close out, re-install everything it
removed, and remove all traces of ONECARE. Very user-friendly program! NOT.
I'll run it per use.

Don`t know who told you they are dangerous , I`ve been using Avast for
3 years and Ad-aware for 5 years ( also Avast gives audio and visual
warnings ) no problems .

Other than the Issue of a "AMD processor with image made from Intel processor
machines" not being an issue, SP3 is junk. I have attempted to run the
"update" on several computers at work and also at home, every time I end up
having to restore the computer to the backup I made prior to downloading the
"update". Why does Windows load so many faults into their programming. O wait
I know So thay can keep soaking the Billions of dollars from the consumer who
keeps buying faulty programming that will just become obsolete once the
majority finally catch up to the early users. DO NOT USE SP3 it doesn't work
on any of 9 computers I have tried to updat it on, these include Dell, IBM,
HP, Compaq, and Toshiba.

So - because you cannot get it to work, it's junk for everyone?

As I stated before - I have not had a 100% failed install yet (and it does
not adversely affect the performance on any of the many machines I have
gotten it installed on - on some - quite to the contrary.)

In fact - just yesterday - using remote desktop - I installed SP3 manually
on seven machines ranging in ages and configuration over a five year period.
I had no problems with the installation of SP3 on these seven. I only did
it manually because I was doing some other cleanup on these machines as
well.

While I can understand your plight and frustration and you may choose to do
whatever you want, your (nor my) experience with Windows XP SP3 should
determine anyone's choice with installing it. If we were to go just by our
two examples, the percentage of systems that have errors not caused by
"something wrong with the system itself that needs to be looked at anyway"
vs. "something wrong with SP3" - things do tend to lean towards "something
wrong with the system itself that needs to be looked at anyway".

For that reason and the fact that one avenue of FREE help with fade from few
in a few short months - frustrated or not - I suggest to everyone they go
through some simple checks and balances and perhaps fix their computer and
get fully updated to ensure they maintain a secure and safe system. (If
they are selling their computer and/or getting a new one with a different OS
soon after April 2009 - then I, although I think they should still do it,
really wouldn't push as hard.)
