I can't get my computer to start. I've run chkdsk and get an
unrecoverable error that can't be fixed and I can never get Windows to
load. I have put in the setup CD and booted from there but I still
can't get it started. HELP!

Cindy

Could you post the exact text of the message. Is this message only
the result of running Chkdsk ? What happens if you try to boot up
XP ? does it stop and present any type of message or BSOD ? If
so can you repost with that information. There are numerous types
of failures and without more information or a clearer description it
isn't possible to give you focused advice on what to do.

Find out if the harddrive itself is defective.
Go to the website of your harddrives' mfg and download their diagnostic
utility...then test the drive...
if it'd bad...replace it and reload your operating system.

If you are lucky you may be able to slave the old drive to the system and
retrieve your data

Try this. What happens? Do you get a Stop Error message you can post?

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click on
the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties, Advanced,
Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck box before
Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

An alternative is to keep pressing the F8 key during Start-Up and select
option - Disable automatic restart on system failure.

If you are using a wireless keyboard and the F8 key does not work
substitute a wired keyboard and mouse for this exercise only.

What is your Windows XP CD as it is described on the face of the CD?

Hope this helps.
