Windows XP won't shut down

I recently upgraded my Compaq Presario from Windows 98 to
Windows XP. Everything seemed to go fine, but I cannot
get Windows XP to shut down when using the "Turn Off
Computer" option. The only way to turn the computer off
now is to shut the power off. Any suggestions on the
cause and a solution would be appreciated.
