I recently installed Windows XP on secondary computer, a
Compaq Presario model 5BW130. Initially it worked fine,
but after unplugging, moving and replugging all
appropriate cables to rear of computer, Windopows XP will
not open properly. I get a sorry message, foolw the steps
as to choices given, stiil it doesn't open nd start. I
ahve even done numrous turn offs, restarts, and restores.
The only way it will work is in a modified safety mode,
but running programs is limited. What did I do wrong, and
how can I fix it.
Thank you.

1) The license for the operating system is for one computer, not two.
Office products, on the other hand (MS Office, MS Word, etc) allow
installing on a primary and secondary computer.

2) You didn't mention much about the content of the messages you're seeing
or exactly what choices they offer - but what you're describing (boot to
safe mode only) is typical behavior if Windows XP has not been activated.

2a) If using a version of Office that require activation, the programs will
run in "limited mode" until activation is completed.

Solution for 2 and 2a is to activate (over the internet or by phone). Once
that has completed successfully, normal operations return.
