Windows XP won't load after installing AVG

My nephew tried to install AVG on his Windows XP machine. It installed but
when his PC started up again, it got as far as the log-in. As soon as he
entered his password, he got the Windows is Rebooting message.

He booted to the Last Good Configuration and found that AVG was actually
installed but didn't run, giving a Winerr=2 error. He uninstalled it. I
let him have my download which I'd backed onto CD and used successfully on
my PC but he got exactly the same results so we knew his download wasn't
faulty. We remembered to switch off all programs (including Zone-Alarm) and
he is an 'Administrator'.

I see from reading past messages that a few people have experienced the same
problem but with no solution found while others had no trouble installing
AVG. Have any of you any opinions what is happening to him and is there
anything he can do?

Hi

You might want to read through these groups too:
alt.comp.anti-virus and an XP group for the Winerr=2 error.

Thanks for the tip, Boomer. I'll do that.

Sounds like he has a virus or 2. Trend Micro has an excellent freeware
virus/trojan cleaner/scanner.
Download this:
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/sysclean.com
and
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/pattern/lpt630.zip
Unzip lpt630.zip into the same folder as sysclean.com. Disable any
anti-virus you have running then double click sysclean.com. Easy and very
thorough.
Complete instructions here:
http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/products/tsc/readme.txt
