Windows XP won't load after automatic update

My laptop received the latest automatic Windows update (5/9) and fails to
load Windows after the auto restart. Have got into safe mode and tried 2
system restores to no avail. Any fixes without re-installing the OS?

The Windows Logo appears, but the small box below runs and nothing else
happens. I assume that Windows is trying to load, but isn't finding what it
needs. If I turn power off, the screen comes up with the sp2 message that
says a problem in shutdown occurred and asks whether I want to start windows
normally, with network prompt, etc, or safe mode. I can only get into safe
mode, which is where I tried the system restore twice, both of which failed
to launch Windows properly. Keep in mind all of this happened after the auto
update of 5/9 and the auto restart, which is when this problem started.

Jeff Jewitt,
One of the Hotfixes that you probably downloaded was a check for Malicious
Malware.
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - May 2007 (KB890830)
It basically a one time check during the reboot of your hard drive, like a
"mini Windows Defender/LiveWire" check, even if you do not have the full
program installed on your PC. Depending on how big your HDD is, this might
take just a few to several minutes to complete. You need to let it run its
course, before Windows will boot.

It presumably ran a half a day when I discovered the problem. At least from 3
AM to 9 AM. Thanks though, I will let it run today and see.
However, looking at the updates in the Control panel, it looks as though
system restore removed all updates prior to April 1st.

Jeff Jewitt,
1. The "Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - "Month" 2007 (KBxxxxxx)"
Update, usually is part of the HotFixes package, that Microsoft sends
release monthly. So there will be a June hotfix next month, and so on.

2. In "Safe Mode", have you tried uninstalling the recent Microsoft
Hotfixes? And see if you computer boots properly, there might be a conflict
with on of the updates and your installation of XP, or another application.

3. Do you have a program like Ad-Aware or Spybot installed, that you can run
from "Safe Mode", and see if you have any malware or spyware on your PC.
Then try removing anything found there; see if then you can reboot your PC.

4. Consider purchasing a program such as Norton Ghost or Acronis True
Image10.0(Vista compatible/software I use and recommend), if you do have to
do a fresh install of XP. Then after the fresh install, run the program, and
make a backup if you have problems in the future. It will restore your PC,
in a hour, instead of taking hours.
