Two days of Odissey trying to restore Windows XP

Hi all,
my laptop runs Windows XP SP2. Recently I got the
\windows\system32\config\system file damaged and the OS didn't starts.
I tried to restore it loading Windows 98 from a CD. I used the DOS shell to
copy an old system.bak file from the windows\repair folder to
\windows\system32\config renaming the file to system.

After rebooting I was able to run the OS and although I got many errors from
the drivers installed and Windows XP was reversed back to a three years old
version without SP2 installed, I was able to going through the folders to
back-up my data to an external drive.

Anyway the system was running slow and I had to restore my latest
configuration with SP2 and all the patches released until now from
Microsoft.

I used a four day old restore point from Windows System Restore. After the
automatic reboot of the computer, only the wall paper on my desktop was
loaded and I missed all the shortcut icons and the toolbar. I waited for
around four minutes but nothing happened. Then I decided to run the task
manager with Ctrl-Alt-Del and restart the computer from it.

The computer restarted and after two/three minutes I got the Restore Point
dialogue window that tolds me the operating system was correctly restored.
Anyway the date and time were not correctly taken back to the time of the
restore point.

My laptop runs smooth now. Anyway I was thinking if there will be any
consequences for having reboot the computer at the end of the restoring
process.

Any Idea?

Thanks for your support.

Thanks for the reply Sharon.
I was sure there was a message in the System Restore Configuration window
that says just that.
Maybe I was uncorrectly interpreteted what was written. Anyway I'm glad to
hear from you that System Restore doesn't have to take the date and time
backward after the restoring process has completed.

I hope my laptop system will be able to stay healthy for a long time.* Me
crossing fingers*
