Windows XP will not start up correctly

I have Windows XP Home Editiion on my computer. Yesterday it locked up and
would not do anything. I manually turned it off after several minutes of no
response. When I tryed to restart, it started and then stalled at the Windows
logo page where it shows that it is starting with the blue bars that go
across the screen. It stayed at that page for about 15 minutes, when I
manually shut it down again. When I tried to restart it again, a page came up
saying that it did not start successfully. Then it gives me the choice of
starting in safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with commands,
last known good configuration and to start windows normally. I have tried to
start in all modes but will not work. I left it on the screen it sticks on
for over 2 hours yesterday to see if maybe it would work if I gave it more
time. Any ideas why it is doing this?

Thanks,
Deanna
