Windows XP will not shut down

The last 2 weeks XP Professional will not completely shut down after getting
to the point of saving my settings. The cursor will still work, but it will
not cut off unless I do it manually. Once I got a sgtray.exe error message. I
have service pack 2 plus latest upgrades via automatic download. Any
suggestions?

This might help. Let us know if it does.

If you experience slow logoff (with Saving your settings for most of the
time while logging off), you are having profile unload problems.

If you see a lot of Userenv/1517, Userenv/1524 or Userenv/1500 errors in the
Event Viewer, download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

This decreased my shutdown time a bunch. Takes any where from 10 to 20
seconds to shutdown.

C:\Program Files\UPHClean\uphclean.exe is added.

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service gets added to Services and
uphclean.exe will run all the time. I am one that doesn't like to have any
extra services running, but I am sold on UPHClean.

Wes;

I downloaded UPHC and it still will not shut down after saving settings. I
do not get any of the error messages you spoke of, much the less any error
messages. It just will not cut off unless I do it manually. Any other
suggestions? Thanks for your help!

Bill,

Is uphclean.exe running?

Look in Task Manager, Ctrl + Shift + Delete, click the Processes tab.

Look in Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click User Profile Hive Cleanup |
Set to Automatic under Startup type | Click the Start button if not started

Wesley;

I'm not very technically smart...I don't know how to pull up the Task
Manager. However, I did go to Programs and found where it was stored, and
double clicked on it and a black screen briefly came up and then
disappeared...I repeated this several times. Under properties, the date on
the program is April 27, 2005. Does that matter? Is this the same utility?

Hello,

This will certainly resolve the problem.

Click START.
Click RUN.
Type MSCONFIG (hit enter or click OK).
You will see System Configuration Utility Screen.
Click on top right STARTUP tab.
Underneath, remove check marks from most of items. (Dont remove check
from i
tems that are for your internet security like McAfee or Norton, do not
unche
ck your internet service, Do not uncheck spoolsvr, Do not uncheck
Digital Li
ne Detect, Do not uncheck any item that refers to your printer.
The settings and options may vary from computer to computer. So, please
excu
se me, if you dont see the same items I have described.

(Information: Some programs are running in background and windows is
unable to shut them. So, windows XP will hang while shutting down).

Please lemme know if that helped.

Thanks & Regards,

Adydale;
Thank you for the help. I looked at the startup, and I'm not sure what to
uncheck. Some things are more obvious than others...I'll see if I can somehow
figure out the abbreviations. thanks again
