Windows xp will not shut down

When shutting down the computer after being on for
several hours, it will not shut doen. I must power off.
I have spoken with Compaq support twice and still no
results. The only new software is Norton System works,
and a printer driver. Anyone have similar problem and/or
no how to fix. I am concerned something is wrong with
computer. I'm new at this.

go to control panel power options and enable advanced power management.
