Windows XP Very Slow to Open Any Files Only When Connected to the Network

I am having a problem with Windows XP on a bunch of machines where it
takes a very long time to open any file by double clicking on it. You
can open the application first that the program is associated with
first and then open it through the application and it opens very
quickly.

The strangest part is that it only happens when connected to the
network.

I think it might be the windows web file association that is trying to
go out to the net and eventually times out, but I can't figure out how
to disable it. Anyone have any ideas?

I have exactly the same Problem here, I tried nearly everything to
solve this (antivirus, all updates, antispyware, disabling all services,
disabling all startups etcetc). No luck!!!

Now I will try Your suggestion, trying to disable the "File Association
Web Service". Have a look at this page:

No! It did not help. I have still delay when right-clicking on Icons on
my desctop or when opening files! :-( But just for information, the
delay are not there everytime: when clicking again on the same Icon
there will be no delay an it show the context menue immediately..same
with opening files..

File associations are not necessarily the cause, anyway. There are ways to
reset all associations to XP default, but I doubt that is causing ALL files
to open slow.

Restore Default File Associations Easily:
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_easy_file.htm

Resetting the IE defaults might make it stop some corrupt behavior.

Open IE, Tools menu, Options, Program Tab, and click the "Reset Web
Settings" button.

To repair all system files, go to Start/Run, and type: SFC /SCANNOW

Your problem maybe with DNS.
a simple ipconfig /flushdns may work.
but I find the best work around is to add the ip address of your
fileserver into the windows XP DNS settings. (make use you also enter
your ISP DNS server IP)

If you have Service Pack 2 installed, it added an option for internet
browsing & email to "Set Program Access & Defaults". You access this from
Start menu on taskbar or in All Programs. Try customizing it to your
preferences. It worked for me. Hope this helps.
