Windows XP very slow closing down

Hi, hope someone can help me: After having run fine for
about 3 months now my laptop (Toshiba 2540 [2.54Gb, 512Mb
Ram])takes about 4 minutes to close down! After I click
on "shut down" it does nothing for about 3 minutes and
then starts the normal shutdown procedure (hard disk
whirring, light showing etc...and then message: "windows
is shutting down"). I wonder what may be the solution?
