Windows XP Upgrade

I want to upgrade a Win 98SE machine to Windows XP. What is the
difference between the Upgrade and the Full edition, other than price?
Is it possible to do a clean install with the Upgrade Edition.

One reason for upgrading is, that the computer is acting funny and I
want to reprogram it anyway. For this reason I would prefer a clean
install just to make sure that all the funny business is gone.

I also have a question about Home vs. Pro. What is meant by
multi-lingual support, and what does Home lack in this regard?

The upgrade can be installed cleanly, as long as you have the CD to upgrade
from; I think it will prompt you to enter the CD during installation. I'm
not too sure about this, but I think the difference between Full and Upgrade
is that Full can only do a clean install, but Upgrade can do both.

If you're planning on rebuilding, I would definitely suggest upgrading your
OS, as there is only limited support for Win98, and soon it will be gone
entirely.

As for multi-lingual support, I think (again, not too sure, so take with a
handful of salt) that Pro comes in foreign language editions, whereas Home
may only come in English. Sorry I can't be more helpful on this issue; I'm
sure the MVPs will have gads of information for you.

The only difference is in what the installation routine does. On the
upgrade version, the install routine looks for evidence of a
qualifying product before it actually starts the installation. On the
full, retail version no check is done and the installation will always
work.

Yes. If you install it on a clean partition, it (of course) will not
find a qualifying product there. In that case, it will let you insert
your Win98SE CD into the CD drive to prove that you qualify. Once it
verifies the presence of that disk, it will install XP.

Thanks. That is helpful.

Eh? You can do both an Upgrade install and a clean Install with both the
Upgrade version and the Full version.

That's correct.

No, both the Full and Upgrade versions can do both. The only
difference is that the Upgrade version requires inserting a
Previous version's CD during a clean installation.

The only version that can do only a clean installation is the OEM
version.

No, this isn't correct. Both versions can do either a clean
installation or an upgrade.

The only difference is that the Setup checks to make sure there is
evidence of your owning a 'qualifying product'. In a clean install, you
can show it the Win98 CD (a regular retail one, not an OEM restore one)
when asked; or

Run the CD from the existing system. Enter Install, change Upgrade to
New Install, then when it asks you to confirm where, you can hit ESC and
get the chance to select the current partition, delete it, and create
a new RAW one, going on to format it as part of the setup

THis will already have have detected that it was a legitimate upgrade,
and will not ask for the previous system's CD as evidence,
