Windows XP upgrade from Windows 2000

I tried to upgrade a Win2000 pro to XP Pro yesterday. When it got to the
point where it was installing devices it ran for about 5 minutes then the
screen went blank with a blinking cursor. Left it that way for a while, but
it never changed.



I restarted it and it resumed the install. Did the same thing again. Now
it won't even resume the install. I tried the "Last Known Good Installation"
and that didn't work. When I went to the screen where you choose which
operating system and the Win2000 is no longer there.



So... how can I complete the install of XP without losing all the
applications installed on the computer???

Restoring the W2000 startup option is probably just a matter of editing the
boot.ini file, however there is no certainty that it would boot successfully,
even if the W2000 entry were replaced. You could try, though.

To recover your data, the best options are BartPE, or Knoppix, as a bootable
CD. Either of these will allow you to access the data on a nonbootable NTFS
partition. This won't of course provide you with reinstallable programs,
though, only the program and data files themselves.

Hope this helps, basically in situations like this there is often only one
reliable solution, and that is to delete the Windows(WINNT) and Program Files
folders -or better, format the disk- and do a fresh install from scratch.

Me personally, I would restore from my backup and start over - maybe
checking out all my hardware first, as it sounds as if something is amiss -
maybe video card. You did a backup first, right?
