Windows XP Upgrade-Can't install another program's software

After upgrading to XP from 98SE, an important program I
use wouldn't work. I uninstalled XP and uninstalled the
my important program (Alpha Omega Switched on Schoolhouse
Ver. 2.0, homeschooling software). After reinstalling XP
I attempted to reinstall Switched on Schoolhouse (SOS).
The install seemed to be progressing normally. It got to
the point where it said "rolling back action" and seemed
to stick for a several mins. I then received the error
message " Error 1603 Fatal Error during installation
Consult Windows Installer Help (msi.chm) or MSDN for more
information" I contacted the software manufacturer and
they said during an upgrade some 98SE components are left
behind and that was causing my problem and the only
solution would be to do a complete XP install after
booting up to the XP CD. I don't want to lose my setting,
drivers, and cable internet settings. What can I do?

Hi,

There would be no difference between an upgrade (which you did) and a clean
installation (which is what they are telling you to do), both end up with
the same core system files. The only difference is that the upgrade retains
your personal settings - nothing wrong with that. Basically, what I'm saying
here is that you were given a cop-out, because they don't know what's wrong.

Unfortunately, support for the program is usually best found with the
program vendor. I would suggest that you do the following:

Restart the machine, then....

1) Delete the contents of the temp folders, there may be a file in there
interfering with the setup routine of the installer. Get both:

C:\Windows\temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\local settings\temp

2) Turn off all other running programs, especially your antivirus software.
Use ctrl+shift+escape, if necessary, to "end task" on everything.

3) Click start/all programs/accessories/program compatibility wizard and try
installing it in compatibility mode for Win98.
