Windows XP updates stopped working

For some reason my windows update screen stops at the "checking for the
latest version of windows update software" screen and stops. This of course
prevents me from checking for updates. This was working perfectly til today,
and I am fully updated, but I need to get this fixed. Any helpful
suggestions as to why it has stopped and hoew to correct.

My problem is fixed. I had benn configuring Norton Internet Security and had
prevented info about my browser being accessed in the hope of stopping
referrer info being broadcast when running online security scan.
