windows xp update

I run win xp update it downloads the genunie validation tool but fails
to install how do I resolve this I have my system set for auto update I
get the little sheild icon telling me there are updates I click on the
icon it shows 0% and disappears. HELP Thanks

After running the tool, please return to Windows Update and try it again.
