Windows XP Update Icon stuck on system tray

Yesterday, Windows updated started automatically,
downloaded and when finished, no action window came up.
Now the update tray icon is stuck on my system tray
showing "Downloading updates: 0%" and I can't get rid of
it. The file wuauclt.exe is running in the background,
and when I terminate it, it just causes a new instance of
the icon to start running then after a moment it combines
into the same icon showing on the system tray. Any ideas
on how to remove the icon and stop the process?

I am having the same problem with 2 computers in my home.
If someone replies with a fix, I'd appreciate it if you
could send me a quick email. I noticed a couple of other
posts with the same problem.

Same thing happened to me - I solved it by going into Control Panel,
opening Automatic Updates and turning it off. The icon disappeared.
Then I clicked back on the setting I had previously (Notify me). The
icon returned, but is working now - it says SP2 is ready to install,
which I don't intend to do for a while yet, too many reports of
Windows crashes afterwards.

Too many reports of windows crashes????? Do you have any idea of how many
were successful? Error free?

Hi Dick,

I had the same issue. If you change the automatic update policy in th
XP controlpanel from "automatically download" to "inform about updates
(I am not sure what the exact frases are in the US version of window
XP, I am using the Dutch version). Then you might notice that wuaucl
is actually downloading SP2 (which is quit big), so depending on you
download speed, it might take days before downloadstatus changes fro
0% to a higher value.
You can choose not too download XP2 and inform wuauclt not to offe
downloading SP2 ever again.
