Windows XP unable to auto-install drivers for Samsung ML-5100A via USB

I'm having problems getting a Samsung ML-5100A printer to work, when
directly attached to my PC, via USB (1.1). I'm running Windows XP SP1.
It's spent most of it's life attached to another PC (running Win98
SE), setup as a shared printer.

I've tried several different USB ports, but each time the same thing
happens. Windows detects the printer, installs USB printing support,
and correctly identifies the printer. It then goes to install drivers,
but complains that it cant find any, if I tell it to do it
automatically.

Now, Windows XP has built-in drivers for this printer, so I'm confused
- how can it not find drivers?

If instead I manually select the manufacturer and model, to force it
to use the correct drivers, Windows warns me that "... the device may
not function correctly as the drivers may not be compatible with this
device ...". And sure enough, when I print a test page out, I get
garbage.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Eric.

Go to Samsung's website, and see whether they have updated
drivers.

As general rule, always go to the mfr's website first.
That usually solves the problem. If a mfr doesn't have a a
viable driver, then there isn't one. Sometimes, a driver
for an earlier version of the printer will work, but
features will be limited.

Been there, tried that. Because the driver for this printer is built
into XP, Samsung arent developing their own drivers for it. Ergo there
is no updated driver.

I realize you want the printer to work in USB, but since you are having trouble why not try
connecting it via parallel? I have a scanner that fails to work with USB on any OS, but works
nicely via SCSI. Might be worth a try.
