Windows XP Stuck on Loading Screen - Help!

I have been working on a Dell Latitude D620 laptop for my boss. When I first
received it, it had several viruses and had crashed. I did a fresh install of
Windows XP Home with SP3. It worked great! The only problem was I installed
the Intel wireless driver and it didn't work. I removed it and installed the
Dell driver, and it worked.
When I gave the computer back to him, he wanted to set up a wireless network
at his house so he hired someone to do it for him. He brought it back to me
to look at because it kept dropping the wireless signal. His tech person told
him the internal wireless card was bad so he added an external Linksys card.
He also installed the AVG security suite on top of an active Windows firewall
and CA Anti-virus. When I realized this was installed, I assumed this was the
problem. I disabled AVG which required a restart. Upon restart, it gets stuck
on the black Windows loading screen and the blue status bar keeps moving, but
it never goes further. I can hard shut it down and start it in Safe Mode, and
it works fine. I even uninstalled AVG. It gave me: Commit: Warning:
Unregistration of product AntiVirusProduct with ID {..gave product ID...}
from the Windows Security Center failed. Error 0x80070422. It then tried to
restart again and it did the same thing. I even tried to go into msconfig in
Safe Mode and start it in only Diagnostic Start Up, and it still did the same
thing. Please help me, it is supposed to be fixed by this Friday (2 days).
I'm stumped and really appreciate any assistance. Thank you!

You never stated whether you disabled CA Anti-virus too. As I would if you
didn't. Well it run ok if you disable all start up programs with MSCONFIG?
If so, you now know where to look.

If this was my show then I would do this:
1. Ditch the current installation. It is compromised. Leaving it on the
boss's machine gives you a bad reputation.
2. Re-install Windows and all applications.
3. Install the Linksys card.
4. Use an imaging product such as Acronis TrueImage to create an image of
the installation.
5. Commission the machine at your bosses home. Don't delegate the job - bad
move!
6. When finished, create another image and take it back to your office.

Don't install the imaging tool on your boss's machine - boot it up with the
boot CD that most imaging tools let you create.

Having an image of your boss's installation means that you can restore his
machine in future within a very short time. It gives you the air of a
competent person who is right on the ball.

Thanks for helping Bill. I first tried to only disable all start up programs
in msconfig and it did the same thing. I have had it set the last couple of
tries in msconfig to do a Diagnostic Startup which loads only basic devices
and services. So everything is disabled right now other than the bare
necessities and it still gets stuck. I just verified they are all fully
disabled. As of now it will ONLY run in Safe Mode and functions great there.
Any other ideas? Thank you!

Try MSCONFIG, Selective Startup, and select Services (tab). Check hide All
Microsoft Services. Then Disable All. That means everything but Microsoft
Services will be disabled. I do like Pegasus (MVP) idea though. As it does
sound like this system might be infected. And thus a reinstall just might be
necessary.
