every time i start windows xp it brings up an error that
says "a duplicate name exists on the network". i'm on a
LAN at west chester university, but i'm not sure how this
relates to the error message.

this is also my first time using a newsgroup message
board. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Greetings

This could mean that you are logged in at another PC. If you ask the IT
departemtn at your university they can provide more help. Since they manage
the network.

The name of your computer is the same as another computer on the network
they must be unique.
Change the name of your computer.

Right click My Computer and Properties then Computer Name.
