Windows XP startup / boot freeze restart

Hello, problem here. My computer was working fine, until today. I started
it up and it keeps resetting during boot. It would get past the windows
loading (spash?) screen and not quite to the login screen. Then it would
simply restart. Then it would of course go to the startup menu screen.
Safe mode (all varieties freeze upon enter) and start normally sometimes
freezes and sometimes gets past windows loading, but then resets again. I'm
currently working on Windows XP professional with SP2 with I believe all
recent updates. My original install disc is an OEM with SP1 (though I do
have another disc with SP 2 on it). I tried repairing the installiation but
now I'm in the setup screens (with the time remaining on it) and its stuck
copying files from the disc. It is comrepl.dll - I got a whole bunch of
files to copy from my second installation CD, but this one doesn't work. I
tried 2 other install discs plus even copied from my other computer to a
flash drive which didn't work (tho it detected). Any ideas? Thanks

I'm afraid I cannot help you with a fix, but it may help your sanity to know
that I too am fighting with the problem you described. It's not consistent;
some days my machine will boot with no problem, others are just w hole world
of hurt.

Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly. Right click
on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select Properties,
Advanced, StartUp and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck
box before Automatically Restart.

Do not re-enable automatic restart on system failure until you have
resolved the problem. Check for variants of the Stop Error message.

There will also be Error Reports in Event Viewer. Please post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

I see no reason to have it eneabled at all, it's useless and wastes
everyone's time. If there's a problem we need to know what it is. With
Automatic restart enabled we just go around in reboot circles when a
crash occurs.

Your information is a lot of help. My machine hung comletely the other day
and I had to complete a 'Repair' reinstallation. The machine seems to be
starting with a little more consistency now.

I did, in accordance with your instruction, interrogate the Event Viewer.
The only error to feature was this:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 09/02/2006
Time: 11:37:55
User: N/A
Computer: *******
Description:
The General Purpose USB Driver (adildr.sys) service failed to start due to
the following error:
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it
has no enabled devices associated with it.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I don't know if this is associated with the problem I was having but it
appears in the log after every start.

Regards

Phil

Have you made any changes to your method of connecting to the internet?

Changed modems?
