windows xp sp2 wont recognize usb multi-slot card reader/usb hub

I purchased a multi-slot card reader/usb hub and upon inserting it, I get a
message saying that windows does not recognize this device. I tried to
install the driver( with the device unplugged) and I go thru the install
procedure and when it tells me to plug the device in, I get the same message
and then the install procedure tells me that since there is no device
installed, installation has been terminated.
I have used a usb web-cam and a usb flashdrive and I had no problem with
them. No drivers where installed for them. I had taken the device to a
friends house and without installing the driver, he was able to use it. So he
brought his card reader over and it wont recognize his either.
I am using Windows XP w/SP2, IE7 BETA 2 and like I said I have had no
problems with any OTHER usb devices.
HELP !

First, try this..

Go to your device manager (rite click my comp, props, hardware) and
uninstall any flags.

Find the .inf driver found on the driver cd, copy the containing folder
to your desktop.

Reboot, and when windows finds new hardware, tell it to search that
folder you just copyed to your desktop. If it says no driver found, you
have a fauly piece of hardware/driver, or, doubtfully, your version of
windows is messed.

If the above fails, try to download a newer driver for your hardware.
