Windows XP SP2 Home Edition - Control Panel

A few months ago, I noticed the add/remove programs icon was missing from my
control panel. I posted here and tried several things to run appwiz.exe with
Rundll32 but without success. Could there be something in my
antivirus/antispyware that is preventing appwiz from running? I use Norton
internet security 2005, Spybot, NoAdware and Spy Sweeper.

Thanks

Hi,

Click start/run, type CONTROL APPWIZ.CPL and click ok. If this does not open
Add & Remove, then the file is either damaged, missing, or hidden by a group
policy. For the latter, you need to check with your system administrator.
For the others, replace it with a new copy from
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386.

Rick - Thanks for the response. Did all that and didn't work. My computer
is at home and I am the administrator. I don't think there is a group policy
or at least I couldn't find it. Not sure where to go next.

Anything in the event file?

Two repeated messages.

First: "Detection of product '{CD1CD48D-7B18-4254-B43D-AEAB704AB063}',
feature 'MailBox' failed during request for component
'{D63F75DD-A0BA-4F10-8EFB-90CE24836B4C}'"

Second: "Detection of product '{CD1CD48D-7B18-4254-B43D-AEAB704AB063}',
feature 'MailBox', component '{5CC2D105-DDDD-4EC4-8B74-750194E57B99}' failed.
The resource 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\InstallShield\UpdateService\' does
not exist."

Is this a clue. I don't speak registry.

Thanks

Hi,

Start/run msconfig, click on "expand file" (general tab)

File to expand: appwiz.cpl
From: C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386
To: C:\Windows\system32

If your installation is in a different folder, such as C:\Winnt, change the
"To" path accordingly or use %windir%. Reboot when finished.

I found a solution to this problem from the XP Newsletter I subscribe to:

I ran: sfc /scannow from the run window and it restored the missing control
panel function.

Thought I would post so all could see how to fix this.
