Windows XP SP2 hangs on install.

I continue to get the same error message no matter how many times I try to
install from the CD. It gives a "cyclic redundancy" something-or-other error
(I forget the exact term) during extraction. The file and destination are
"i386\mfc42u.dl_ to d:\f17d0bd7bbcb66c8a352".

This confuses me not only because it's computerese--which I don't speak--but
it's extracting to my D: drive, not my C: drive.

When I'm installing, I turn off everything from my internet to my antivirus
(McAfee) and just let the autorun do its thing. I'm running XP Pro on a 1.4
gig AMD processor with 512 megs of memory, so I meet the minimum
requirements. Is the installation coming into conflict with something else
or is the installation flawed, do you think?

Or could I try starting Windows in safe mode and installing SP2 that way, so
there's nothing of consequence running to interfere with installation? Or
would safe mode prevent installation?

Ah, screw it. I think I'll just go cry in my Cheerios. Thanks in advance
for your answers.

Data error (cyclic redundancy check).
relates to a Data error from where the file is being read/extracted from.
