Windows xp sp2 fails during installation

My computer has not been able to download and install Windows XP sp2 from
Microsoft update for some time. After fixing the problems with update, with
the help of Microsoft, i progressed immediately to download and install
windows XP sp2 to my computer. During installation, its pops up a message
stating that the installation is "Unable to read from or write to the
database" followed by the cancellation of my installation. if anyone knows
what might be wrong, or if there is anyone that would point me in the right
direction, i would greatly appreciate it. I've pulled out a couple of hairs
in the process of this download...and this makes it worse. Also i am
currently running Windows XP Home Edition SP1a if that would help.
