Windows XP SP2 freezing on install

I've tried installing service pack 2 on my machine both from the internet and
by CD from Microsoft. In both instances it acts like it "freezes up" when it
gets to the point where it says "backing up registry." I can still do other
things (browse internet, view Excel files, etc) when this happens, but I have
to open the task manager to cancel the installation. Does anyone have any
ideas? Bad registry? Thank you.

Do you have any antivirus/antispyware running while you do this? Try to
disable it.
