Windows XP SP2 causing a lot of problems

Hi
I have been trying for weeks to install the SP2 on my home edition XP. But
each time, the installation was stopped at "creating a registry" point , with
the error message "Cannot read from or write on the database".

Finally, With someone's help, I used a batch file and got past that point.
and I THINK I installed it.

My problem could be an incomplete or faulty installation from a CD. This may
be the root of my problems, such as the sudden "genuine windows " validation
trouble.

Why I say faulty or incomplete, because in the control panel, “system†, it
does show SP2 installed.

Yet there are many things missing, such as windows firewall, or that red
shield in the quick launch menu ( pertaining to firewall, automatic windows
update/AV ).

And my internet explorer 7 suddenly vanished, and even the previous version
does not function properly !!

After installation of SP2, not only it damaged a lot of programs in my
computer, it also did something to my newly installed “Internet Explorer 7â€.

Not only the “Internet Explorer 7†is nowhere to be seen, hence no “Info
bar†to continue with the validation, but also my previous version of
“Internet Explorer†also is not functioning properly !!

I have tried the different suggestions made at microsoft’s website, which are:

1- In “Add or remove programs†and “updates†slot checked, I remove it.

But in MY computer, after checking the “updates†box, the SP2 does NOT show !!

Therefore, I cannot remove it by this means.

2- after installation of this SP2, all the previous “restore points†in my
comp, have been wiped clean, so I do not have any date prior to the
installation date to restore my comp to !!

3- I have also tried typing the following .exe program, in the “run†program
, but the message says it cannot find the SP2 folder !!!

c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe

Please help me remove the current SP2 update, so I can download the proper
SP2 update directly from the Microsoft website.

I do NOT want to use the CD again ( for obvious reasons ).

Thank you

Peyz

Hi peyz,

Before You try anything else Please collect some info on how to
prepair Windows XP before installing SP2, if You find nothing
on my Google search, try Microsoft Website on the install procedure.

Here is my Google Search: http://tinyurl.com/yx65m6

It can be done, Good Luck, x@y

Thank you "x@y" .

I shall definitely try it out, and will let you know.

Altho' this slipstreaming seems complicated for someone like me ( Hey, the
"**** for dummies" series of books is for people like me ! ).

Dear X@Y,

At this moment, I am not in the states, and I dont have access to my
original XP CD.

Which sort of makes "slip streaming" impossible for me.

However, I do have my SP2 CD.
Do you think it would resolve my problem (even if temporarily, until I get
back to the states ), if I attempt to install the SP2 once more?

This is based on the presumption that maybe the first installation was
faulty or incomplete, and the new one may take care of that.
Do you think this may solve things?

And if yes, will the new installation eat up into my hard disk space, or
will it write OVER the previous one?

Once again, thank you
Peyz

Hello Peyz,

Yes You could try once more, a couple of things I would suggest
before You try the re-install.

First Log off the Internet, just while the Installation:

Then scan Your System with Your installed: Antivirus/Spyware/Adware,
programs whatever You have, in Safe Mode is even better.

Next is good Idea to Create a Restore Point,
and also if You are set for an OS Backup on the C:\ HD,
or on an External HD. This would help in case things gets worse,
at the least You can restore Your system as it is at the Present.

If You think this all too difficult for You to follow, I would advice
get some help from a close Friend who is more familiar
with Windows, and SP2 install. Play Safe!!

Post back with the out come, I have this Thread marked "Watch"
and it stays on top of the NG., till I uncheck it.

Good Luck, x@y

Forgot to mention, You should also disable: Your Antivirus, and Spyware
Programs during the install,
also read the instruction that came with the CD if any.

Many thanks, mate.

At the moment, at the suggestion of a friend of mine, I am checking for
"malware" in my comp.

I have downloaded quite a few programs ( spybot, C-clean, regclean,
counterspy, getrunkey, shownew, ... ) apart from my standard Norton AV and
Ad-aware , and have come up with quite a few trojans, viruses and whatnots !

Right this moment, I am doing an online scan by "bitdefender" ( which is
taking forever !!! ) .
And after this one, I am to scan it with Panda ActiveScan !!

Once ( dont ask me when, coz this bitdefender is a neverending process !!! )
this thorough cleaning is over, I shall try to
1- make a restore point on my C drive.
2- go to safe mode
3- install SP2 once again.

Will keep you posted.
Thanks again

Hello Peyz,

You are doing great on cleaning up Your Computer,
after all that cleaning, and disabling all Your Security Programs,
only during install, after SP2 install make sure they will be all on again.

Or in Safe Mode like You Have mentioned it should also be OK.

I have installed SP2 in my old Computer, when Microsoft
released It, also had minor a minor problem at the beginning
but they were fixed. All I can recall, it messed up a few settings in my
System, this happened about four Years ago.

Then this Spring I have upgraded my Computer to XP Pro.
and the SP2 program was included.

Thanks for Posting back, & Good Luck, x@y
