Windows XP SP1 doesn't install

Louis

My son asked for my help in installing XP SP1 on his roomates computer. OF
course he was just visiting and didn't have the system with him.

Here's the problem.

He goes to the Windows Update site and follows the steps for downloading and
installing SP1.

When he reboots the computer and checks System Properties, SP1 is not listed
as installed. If he goes back to the website, it states he needs to install
SP1.

He's gone so far as to wipe the drive and use the RESTORE cd to re-image the
computer. Trys to update and same issue.

His roommate has a Sony Vaio desktop.

I don't know the model of the computer or if he's using XP HOME or PRO.

Waiting for that information.

Any ideas on where to start?

Thanks,

Louis

Turn off all virus scanners and if using a firewall OTHER than IE's turn that
off. If no go search for the file 'catroot2' and rename it to anything. Reboot
and try again. A new catroot2 file will be generated.

Do you get an error? SP1 will not install if Windows XP has not been activated
correctly.
