I will be installing the original (pre SP1) XP Home on an older computer,
after
installation of XP and drivers, can I just install SP3 without installing
SP1 & 2 ?

No. You have to first install *either* SP1 (or SP1a) or SP2. You don't
have to install both SP1 and SP2, though.

I just did the same thing on XP Pro. I have the SP3 cd that I ordered from
MS and it was cumulative and covered all updates necessary. If you read all
the readme files and install headings it will also inform you as to whether you
want to add the internet explorer 7 upgrade (since by default the cd SP3
does Internet explorer 6 due to some uninstalling ramifications)
If you are downloading SP3 I'm not sure if you have to do SP1 and 2 first
but you should be able to read such at the MS download site.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks, even though MS says "Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) includes all
previously released updates for the operating system" I suspected
I might need SP1 or 2 as you wrote.

SP3 needs to locate a setting / file that was delivered only as of
SP1. SP3 will not install, by itself, without SP1 at least.

Oops I must have had SP1 on my recovery cd and did not know it then.
