Windows XP Signon

Hi all,

I am having a major problem with my XP Pro system and hope I can
recover qithout losing all of my data.

When I boot up, I come to the signon screen but no users show up on
the screen. Since I cannot signon, it just sits on that screen. I have
tried to boot to safe mode, use last know configuration and everything
else I can think of.

If nothing else, I am hoping to get to the drive to recover my data.

Any help is appreciated.

The data is probably safe right now, but it sounds like you don't have a
very recent backup. Fortunately, at this point, that's often not a huge
problem.

A very easy way to recover your data, if you have access to another PC with
sufficient drive space and XP (Home or Pro), is to download and install the
Acronis True Image trial version to that other PC, then remove your system's
drive, attach it to that system, and take a full image of it. All up, you
should be done inside of 90 minutes. Mount the image in read-only mode and
you should be able to browse through all your files and copy off whatever
you need.

Then, with a verified backup, you can go on to fix whatever the problem
actually is. If you're nervous, restore the image to a *new* hard disk,
and fix that one - this will leave the original undisturbed, you will have a
full backup, and you'll be fixing a copy.

This would be the place I would start - being sure that you do have an
accessible and new copy of your data.

Its good to know the data is ok. I do have access to another PC with
XP home on it, but the drive is not big enough. My last ditch plan is
to buy a new drive and Windows XP, put it into the PC and do somethign
along the lines that you mentioned.

At the Welcome Screen, hit the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys twice.
This should bring up the Logon to Windows dialog.
Enter your User Name and password.

Once you are able to logon, you might want to go to Control
Panel -> User Accounts and disable the Welcome Screen. With the
Welcome Screen disabled, you'll see the Logon to Windows dialog
when you start up.

Once you have your important files backed up, you can research
the Welcome Screen issue.

Good luck
