Windows XP shut down

I no longer cannot use the Stand By option when turning
off my laptop. The button is still there but it's 'greyed'
out (inactivated somehow). Any clues how to reactivate so
I can hybernate when not using the pc?

Check in the Power control panel to see if this option has been disabled.

If it has done, renable it and see if your Stand By option reappears
