Stand-by / Hybernate

[Beginner]

I have a Toshiba laptop with XP.

When I try to stand-by or Hybernate the computer the screen remains forever
with the message that it is preparing to stand-by/hybernate.

There is no way of bringing the computer back other than switching it off
altogether by pressing the power button for 4 secs or so.

What could be wrong?

I have seen this problem, even on my own Toshiba laptop, caused by a couple
of different issues. Most of the time it was due to an older version of the
system
BIOS that was not compatible with certain plug-and-play devices or drivers
that were added to the system.

If you feel comfortable doing system BIOS updates, go to Toshiba's web site
and located the latest BIOS upgrade for your system, download and install
it.
If you aren't in to that sort of thing, take your system to your local
Toshiba
dealer or repair facility for the upgrade.

If this doesn't fix the problem, it could be caused a device driver itself
that is
not compatible with Windows XP. Make sure that you have the latest, XP-
compatible device drivers for any PC cards (modems, LAN cards, etc.)
that you have added to the system.

Many thanks for your quick reply.

You're right: I am not comfortable doing system bios, but if it is just a
question of download as the following page suggests:

Then there does not seem to be much to it.

What I am not sure about is which adapter I should upgrade as I can see 2 in
the Device Manager:

1394 Net Adapter (it's supposed to be from Microsoft, but can't find it
anywhere on the net)
Intel(R) Pro/100 VE Network Connection

Any help explaining why I have 2 adapters would be welcome

I have a Home Network that works through a router and is connected to the
net by cable

I was addressing the LAN cards and not the BIOS upgrade as I could not find
anything at all in the Toshiba page

I found the Bios upgrade and have it on a diskette.

'I have ner dome this sort of thing before' and wonder what can go wrong and
hoiw to recover.

Is system restore of any use in this type of situation?
