Windows XP shut down hangup

When I choose to Shut Down my computer, the system simply hangs up forever,
with the message "Windows Shutting Down".
Recent changes to my computer include:
Upgrading to IE 7.0
Installation of Microsoft Office Home and Student
Removal of Microsoft Word & Excel 97

Does anyone have any ideas for curing this problem?
