XP cannot be shut down anymore ...

Hi,

My home XP cannot be shut down anymore. I always get a message box
saying "Windows is shutting down." and then XP hangs forever until I
pull out my electrical cord. Any idea what is happening? Is it
fixable? Any help is much appreciated.

First off, don't pull the cord. Press the power button for up to 20 seconds
to force the power off.
Second, how is general performance? Do you get unexpected web pages?
Regardless, try running a few anti-spyware programs. I found Grisoft's AVG
Anti-Spyware (www.grisoft.com) effective. Also look at SpyBot Search and
Destroy (www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html), and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware
(http://www.lavasoft.com). (These are in addition to your standard Internet
Security package).
Any cookies mentioned in the results of scans are not likely to be part of
the problem.

sounds like something is running in the background.. do a spyware and
virus scan of your computer, also you can hit ctrl alt del and see
what programmes / tasks are running on your computer if there is
anything that looks suspicious there type it into google.

Any advice is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.
