Windows XP Service Pack 2 crashes

Hi All,

In the past, I upgraded my system from XP SP1 to SP2 and all worked well.
After many months, I installed certain software(NetXPert) which intercepted
my browsing experience weirdly due to which I uninstalled NetXPert. But now
my IE6 has been corrupted. Whenever I try to close any IE window, I get the
windows error message and asks for sending report to Microsoft. The error
happens in oleaut32.dll module. I do have IE6 with latest service pack for it
from Microsoft website.

To solve this, I tried to reinstall my XP SP2(facing problems in system
operations as well like virtual scrolling disabled, searching files not
opening up).

Now while reinstalling XP SP2, the setup wizard itself crashes while
performing "Finishing/Cleanup" operation. The following is the error message
I get every time I try XP SP2 again and again both in Safe mode as well as in
Normal mode.

"error at the "Finishing Installation/Performing Cleanup" part of the
install: "Service Pack 2 has encountered a problem & needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience." AppName: update.exe; AppVer: 5.5.1005.0;
AppStamp: 40f8193a; ModName: ntdll.dll; ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180;

I can't figure out the solution for reinstalling Windows XP Service Pack 2.

Do any guys know how to safely reinstall XP service pack 2 and get around
with this weird error message?

Thanks in advance,
Best Regards,
Nitin

THAT is the issue that must be fixed first and prevents SP2 from installing;
something is borked in the system. YOu'll have to hvae the machine working
right before SP2 can be installed. Have you tried a Repair Install? Second
R option when booting from CD; NOT the first R option!

O ya, I tried that option too but of no avail. In this case, now IE behaviour
has got random crashes. Sometimes, it closes, sometimes it throws error. But
now error in different module: "NTDLL.dll" file.
I also figured out one strange behaviour too that whenever I press the
internet button(quick button on my laptop) when I am inside windows explorer,
the windows explorer changes to internet explorer with folders on left. I
mean the address bar, menu bar etc. changes with folders on the left tree
view. Earlier, pressing the internet quick button was opening up the internet
explorer in a separate process. It seems that somehow the internet explorer
has integrated with windows explorer or the system dlls have been changed.

Do you see any other option of reinstalling SP2 besides formatting my system?
That's the last option I see there but it would be painful to do that as I
have lot of important stuff on my notebook.

Thanks,
Rgds,
Nitin
try looking into svcpack.log to see wich upgrade to hotfix failed,
try installing the hotfix again
if the log does not say which update failed then , like me you have no
hope yet....

Thanks Gal, But I am afraid that didn't help. I have now stopped upgrading my
system to SP2. It seems that these days Microsoft is not doing things
seriously as I am also asked to update my system with IE7 which I have heard
is very poor, and not stable at all. That's why I always skip windows update
for this IE7 installation. SP2 again seems to be lying on the same coin face.
From my opinion, at least it should either do not start to install or give
some meaningful message rather than crashing in the half-way.
This is really painful getting system back on track with everything just ok.
Anyways, thanks again for your input and time.

There is nothing wrong with IE7 per se. The issue most often is problems or
the configuration/software on the underlying system. This is also true with
SP2. SP2 must be added to a well running system clean of malware.

I would not install SP2 using windows update. Download the the full
installation version and burn that to CD or order the SP2 CD for the cost of
shipping or create an XP installation CD that has SP2 slipstreamed into it
and do a clean install with that.

Thanks Rock,
I hope slipstreaming SP2 with XP might be the best bet in such cases.
Meanwhile, my system is working nearly okay and so I will be doing
slipstreaming later. Thanks again for the readings.

Rock, yesterday I created a slipstreamd CD of SP2 with XP. Just a query, is
slipstreamed CD a bootable one or it is just an upgrade system type CD?
Actually I created it using nLite software and there it didn't say anything
about the bootable option. It just created it successfully. Can I use this
for a brand new system for installing XP with SP2 by booting through it?

If the slipstreaming was done properly it should be bootable. It's a normal
installation CD. If the slipstream was done with a retail version of XP
then yes it can be installed on another computer as long as it is removed
from the first computer. An OEM version cannot be moved to another system.
It is tied by the license agreement to the first computer on which it's
installed.

I don't know about the version but it is Windows XP Home edition CD which
came with my Compaq laptop having SP1 inbuilt. I will test it to check
further.

Thanks,

Unfortunately that would indicate it's an OEM version. And as I indicated
in the previous post, per the license agreement, it can't be transferred to
another computer. What happened to the Compaq computer it came with?

Nothing. It's working just fine but I wanted to make sure that if in future
it crashes then atleast I have SP2 ready for it rather than going again for
SP1 OEM installation and then upgrading it. I had had problems upgrading
system to SP2 twice. First time, it worked perfectly but second time, it
won't, just crashes. I did second time upgrade as my lappy got infected with
spywares and after cleaning, it was not behaving as I expected, albeit fully
stable. I am still not able to upgrade it again to SP2 but now my system is
working fine(I guess, first time SP2 installation is working fine with some
windows updates). That's why, I am not digging into it further, but as a
backup option, I did this slipstreaming for future.

Thanks Rock for this new exercise and a concept for me to understand.

Yeah and thanks to you too for quick responses. I love these technical
forums, these networking forums are some times pretty useful in resolving
your conflicts and making a network of people around you :)
By the way, something personal, where are you located at? you are responding
so quickly to my postings. I am geographically located in India.

My family that lives next door are from India, they have helped me out quite
a bit. Normally go back around Christmas each year but this time couldn't
because of home remodeling. My physical therapists are Indian as well.
The primary one is always talking about how she wants to move back to Delhi.
She misses it. Physical therapists are really torturers by another
name....lol

Anytime.

Yes, Indians are very hard working that's why they can do many things if
given chance. But it's good to know the people around you as well, maybe
anywhere on this planet. Personally speaking, I like the professionalism of
Americans and the way they perform their duty but on the other hand I love
the cordial behaviour and loyalty of Indians and the way they open their
heart to others. You will never be disappointed while going to them for
anything. This is what I call a perfect balance to which I always want to
strike to in my future. Anyways, be my penpal, that's all I wanted to say for
now. My mail id is: (e-mail address removed)

Cheers,
