I have Windows XP and when I check for Windows Updates it says I need Service Pack 1.
However, when I try to load it it says that
"A connection with the server could not be established."
How do I resolve this problem? Please advise

Mik

Windows XP SP1 is a huge Download - around 100MB. If you have a dial up
connection, don't even consider it. If you have a broadband connection, it
will still take a while and given your current problem, I wouldn't bother
downloading it at all - if you have to re-install windows from a clean disk
sometime in the future, you'll only have to download it again. Best thing
to do is give Microsoft Direct Service a call (In UK, this Telephone Number
is 0870 6010100) and order the Microsoft XP SP1 disk from them. It should
take a few days to arrive. But when it does you shouldn't have the same
problem installing this update, and you will always have it with you. The
disk also includes .NET framework 1, so it saves you downloading that too.

You need to do this ASAP, as many of the downloads that are needed to cope
with new security problems within XP need SP1 installed before they can be
installed. Update your virus scanner now if you don't want to become
friends with Swen and all his nasty little buddies!

Mike;
Do not use Express Installation.
You can order Service Pack 1a CD from:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/ordercd.asp
http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windowsxp/servicepacks/sp1.asp
Or:
Download the Network Installation from here: (be sure to select the
correct language)
Also select "Windows XP Professional and Home Edition" Do NOT select
64 bit.

DSL takes about 20 minutes, if you do not have high speed access, get
a friend to D/L SP1a for you.
Then burn it to a CD and keep for the future.
