Windows XP Repair

Could anyone help with the following:

I had an operational PC running Windows XP Home and deleted a file
recommended by a spyware program as being dangerous. This left me with a
system which appeared to boot including log on but stopped at the screen
depicting the landscape with no icons - or anything else. Task Manager and
Regedit ran but that was all.

I placed my Windows XP CD in the drive and tried to repair using setup as
described on this website & elsewhere.

Setup stops operating at the Installing Windows / Installing devices stage
after a message asking for a modem driver (which I have on floppy) and
sometimes subsequently a PCI device. The message states that the software has
not passed MS Logo testing an that I stop installation and obtain software
which has. Whether I press Yes or No, the machine subsequently crashes and
restarts.

The motherboard is a Via LTV7A including an onboard PCTel modem HSP56MR etc.
The Harddisk is a MAXTOR 60GB 50% full and setup finds no fault when
verifying the drive after the crash(es).

Hi Andy, Many of the spyware removal programs have a "restore feature" that
can be used in cases like this,what program did you use?

This will make some of you laugh but it may help a few others...

I carried on playing while hoping for an 'expert' to answer.

I removed all my USB devices and restarted times lots as recommended in one
of the MS Articles I'd read.

Eventually setup carried on past the Installing Devices section and my
system is now up and running...

Phew!
