Windows XP Removal (Urgent)

Background:

I had a problem with my DSL internet (Internet Explorer, Outlook, Messenger
would open but would be "dead" i.e. would not even atempt to connect) . The
technician looks at everything, including the hardware & the line outside our
home. After fixing the line problems & attempting some settings changes, he
concluded there was a virus as my system as my Antivirus had expired.

I was recommended by some friends to reinstall Windows XP, which I attmpted
twice. The problem I encountered is that upon every attempt, it would ask
which partition I wanted to install. I chose the partition with the previous
Windows but it warned me that installing two operatings systems in one
partition could cause conflicts.

Problem:

To make a long story short, some how there are 2 Windows XP installed on my
system now & I cannot use either one. Once the PC is switched on, you reach a
screen which asks you to choose which (of the two Windows) you want to use
(the only other option on the screen is to switch the computer off). Whether
I choose the older version or the newer version, it takes me through the
first step of registering Windows with Microsoft through the Internet. But as
my Internet settings are not configured (auto configure doesnt work either),
the Internet does work & therefore Im back to the same screen where I need to
choose the Windows (i.e. keep going in circles).

What I want:

To remove both Windows installations, then install Windows once & get on
with my life!

The pfoblem is...there is no discussion in the manual about removing
Windows. It is assumed that at time of reinstall, the system will
automatically remove the previous version? For some reason, my PC did not
remove the original installation & added a new installation too. I want to
remove both & started fresh.

FYI My PC is A Dell (warranty expired) and I am using all original software
supplied with the PC.

Thanks & awaiting your kind suggestions (hopefully with step by step
instructions)

Home user why does your computer boot from cd? If it does, restart with cd in
drive and format make sure you format the biggest partition table inthe NTFS
express format or it will take you forever. If your system doesnt boot from
cd borrow a friends computer and make you a copy of XP boot up floppies it
will take 4 -6 floppy disk. Use this link
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994/EN-US/ to get ur floppy boot disk or
search for "how to obtain windows xp floppy boot disk. This should get you up
and going. I just formatted and clean installed using the same exact method.

What you need to do is boot from the CD and do a clean install. When
you come up to the partition screen, delete the partitions with
Windows. After you deleted them, you can go ahead and create another
partition to use for the clean install.

Follow the step by step paying close attention to the part about deleting
the partition where Windows is currently installed.
Note this will remove all data and programs on the partition.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.
