I regard the KB article Ramesh gavce you as unsound for a general
backup. It exports as very large text files, but importantly there is
not a satisfactory way to restore them clean. ERUNT as suggested is a
good program. But the normal procedure is to let System Restore make
its daily restore points - a complete backup of the registry is the
major component of these, and you can revert to any of them knowing that
the result is a fully consistent system (if it was in the first place).
It is a short term measure - up to say a month - but that is the time
span over which you want a registry backup. Longer than that and things
are out of step with a simple registry backup, and you need some
complete system backup for the long term
