Windows XP recovery console

Help! I need to run the chkdsk/r from the recovery
console of Window's XP. Will this erase My Pictures and
My documents in the process. The error message I have is:
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

You may already have done this but please check the following Knowledge Base
Article, pay close attention to the section on 40-pin and 80-pin cables as
that is the most likely source of this issue depending upon the age of your
system:

Note, while things may have worked in the past, assuming it is related to a
40-pin cable, that only means your system was borderline to begin with and
something in your setup pushed it over the line recently.
