Windows XP (home or pro) is an operating system. Office XP is a suit of
programs, including excel, word, powerpoint, access, outlook, frontpage.
This suit of programs runs on Windows.
Windows XP does not, nor has ever, included Office XP in the operating
system. They are two separate products.
If she needs Office XP professional then she has to purchase Office XP, not
Windows XP.
BUT, I would bet that what she really needs is Windows XP Professional, not
Office XP. Most colleges require their students to log onto a domain. Only
Windows XP Pro can do this. If she needs Windows XP Pro then what she bought
will work fine.
If she needs Offcie XP (or one of it's programs included in it) then she
needs to buy Office XP.

Take the XP Pro Upgrade CD back .Windows XP Professional is the
OPERATING SYSTEM and does NOT contain Office XP programs. You will need
to buy an Office XP CD.
If she does indeed need Office XP, be sure to ask for the student
package. You'll save alot of bucks.

There is an operating system - Windows XP, and an Application Suite -
Office XP. They are quite different products; Office runs on windows,
either the Home or Pro version. So the Windows XP Pro was not needed
for this (there may be reason nevertheless in having it if she wants to
connect to the school's network, you would have to ask them). Standard
'retail' Office is expensive, but you should be able to get a copy of
'Office for Students and teachers' comparatively cheaply - again the
cheapest route may be through the school
